Greene Square: Second African Baptist Church

Sherman and Stanton met here with newly-freed slaves just after the end of the Civil War. The Reverend Henry Cunningham founded this congregation just after Christmas in 1802. Visitors after the Civil War were Union General William Tecumseh Sherman and Edwin McMaster Stanton, U.S. Secretary of War. In 1925, the pulpit was rescued from a devastating fire. (1815) Clapboard house believed to be built for Isaiah Davenport, a builder himself, who came to Savannah from Rhode Island.

(1845) A red frame house built for John Dorsett.
