Online Virtual Tour of Savannah
Johnson Square Welcome to the navel of Savannah. Johnson Square was the first square laid out by Oglethorpe in 1733, named for Robert Johnson, friend and helper to oglethorpe, and Governor of South Carolina in colonial days. It's the first of five squares on Bull Street. The Obelisk is a monument to General Nathanael Greene, Revolutionary War hero and chief of staff to General George Washington. The cornerstone was laid by the Marquis de Lafayette on his trip to Savannah in 1825. Come to Johnson Square on a sunny day to find artists at work, live music, vendors selling hot dogs and lemonade, and office workers taking time for a chat or a snack.
