Online Virtual Tour of Savannah
Chippewa Square: Independent Presbyterian Church
A soaring steeple with clocks on all four sides, topped by a gleaming brass weathervane. Organized in 1755, this congregation has strong Scottish ties. A colorful event each year is the Kirkin' O' the Tartans, (when bagpipes skir-r-rl and kilts twir-r-rl, all on a Sunday mor-r-r-nin'). In 1818, architect John Holden Greene won a design competition with his plans for this magnificent building. When the church burned in 1889, architect William Gibbons Preston directed the rebuilding to the original plans. (Emmeline was glad to have her father's arm to support her when she walked down the long, center aisle in 1955 to marry Robert Scotland Cooper.) At Bull and oglethorpe.
