The oldest gentleman's club in Georgia, the Oglethorpe Club sits across Bull Street from the grandiose Armstrong House. A favorite story (which is often told though not really true) is that the shipping magnate, George Armstrong, built the house after being blackballed by the Oglethorpe Club. The house, as described in "Midnight," is a lion of a house with a curved colonnade that "reached out like a giant paw as if to swat the Oglethorpe Club off its high horse across the street."
