Standing at the west end of the sublime Monterey Square, this ornate Italianate mansion is the center stage of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," providing the setting for Jim Williams' residence and gala Christmas parties. Mercer House was also the unlikely scene of the shooting death of Williams' assistant, Danny Hansford. Williams was accused of killing this reputed "walking streak of sex" and tried four times before finally winning his acquittal.
After he shot Danny Hansford, Williams used to tell people he thought the house had a curse on it. It had already been the scene of two violent deaths before Hansford's -- early in 1913 a previous owner had tripped over the banister, fractured his hip and suffered a concussion, in the 1960s a boy chasing pigeons on the roof had fallen over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.
