Historic Bull Street Online Tour
Independent Presbyterian Church
For a congregation organized in 1755, John Holden Greene of Rhode Island constructed the original Independent Presbyterian Church in 1817-1819, as a finely proportioned structure of Federal design and as such it is one of the most important Federal churches in the country. The original burned in 1889. The four Corinthian columns are topped with hand-carved capitals that support an oval, domed ceiling. The trustees sent representatives over the South in search of trees large enough to construct each column from a single trunk. In 1885 Woodrow Wilson married Ellen Axson, granddaughter of the pastor, in the parlor of the old manse.
