Historic Bull Street Online Tour
Christ Episcopal Church
In the very beginning, Savannah was founded as a Church of England settlement, and the nucleus of religious life was Christ Episcopal Church - under the leadership of its liberal minister, Reverend Henry Herbert. Later followed by other well-known clergymen, such as John Wesley and George Whitefield, both of whom added significant pages to the history of the early colony. With its simple dignity of outline, Christ Church is a perfect example of an early Greek public building. The present building, designed by James H. Couper, was built in 1838, replacing several others which had been razed or burned. Gutted by fire in 1898, it was rebuilt within the original walls. The impressive columned entrance, a graceful interior balcony and a beautiful plaster ceiling are among its architectural superiorities.
