Volunteer Guards Armory

The Savannah College of Art and Design occupies the Guards Armory building which was designed by William G. Preston and built in 1893 for the Savannah Volunteer Guards, the oldest military unit in Georgia. The building, with its broad arches, intricate brickwork, towers and turrets is an outstanding example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Decorative terra cotta and wrought ironwork add visual relief to the red brick facade.
