African-American History Online Tour

Turner Memorial

On Turner Street just north of the Visitor's Center near Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
This memorial monument honors Bishop Henry McNeal Turner, appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 as the first black chaplain in the Union army. After the Civil War, he joined the A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church, in which he was made a bishop in 1880.
