King-Tisdell Cottage - (912) 234-8000 514 East Huntingdon Street
Dedicated to the preservation of African American history and culture, this museum contains artwork, documents, and furnishings typical of a coastal black dwelling of the 1890s. The 1896 frame building features intricate "ginger bread" woodwork in the "Wheel and Spindle" pattern. Be sure to ask about the symbolism in the fountain in the garden, created by metalsmith Ivan Bailey. The King-Tisdell Cottage was saved from demolition by the Savannah-Yamacraw Branch Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. Hours are 12-4:30 p.m. daily; other times by appointment. Admission.
