U.S. Custom House - 1 East Bay Street

Colonel John H. DeVeaux, free-born into a family from Santo Domingo and educated in underground schools in Savannah, founded the news paper Colored Tribune (later Savannah Tribune) in 1875. Later he was appointed U.S. Collector of Customs, the first black man to occupy this high office. Sol C. Johnson took over his duties at the Tribune.
