Originally a school for black children after the Civil War, Beach Institute is now a museum where the Ulysses Davis collection of wood carvings can be seen. Established just after the Civil War on land purchased by Alfred Beach, editor of Scientific American magazine, Beach Institute was staffed by white teachers from the north who came to teach newly-freed black children. Today, the Institute offers a full schedule of programs and exhibits, plus a gift shop. Hours are 12-5 p.m. Tues.-Sun. Admission.
