Orleans Square: 114 and 116 West Hull Street

A pair of houses with high "stoops" (from Dutch "stoep," for veranda or porch.) With tin roofs and twin dormers, these houses were designed in 1817 by John Ash, builder. For many years, until his death in 1974, No. 116 was home to historian William Charlton Hartridge and his family. "Big Walter" was handsome, courtly, energetic, and articulate. How he loved to stride through the streets of his beloved city, gathering historical data for his scholarly books and articles. Corner of West Hull and Barnard.

Built on the site of the Bulloch-Habersham House, designed by William Jay (c.1820) and razed by the city of Savannah in 1914.
