Telfair Square: Telfair Museum of Art

Regency mansion designed by William Jay; statues in front of Phidias, Raphael, Rubens, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. Governor (in 1786) Edward Telfair had a son, Alexander, who recognized the talent of young William Jay and commissioned him to design a house for the family. As specified in the will of Alexander's sister, Mary, the Telfair home became the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1886. Needed expansion was overseen by architect Detlef Lienau who worked hard to preserve Jay's classical Greek design while providing space for exhibits, concerts, and lectures. The Telfair has an exciting schedule of events, plus the elegant annual Telfair Ball and Auction in February. 121 Barnard Street.
