Wright Square: Old U.S. Post Office
Completed in 1898 on the west side of Wright Square, this U-shaped three-story building was erected of Georgia marble. Its architecture reflects an interesting conglomeration of the Spanish, French, Italian Renaissance and Romanesque styles. It is one of the more imposing structures of the late nineteenth century in Savannah. There are elaborate stone carvings and terra cotta ornaments of the highest quality over many openings, including one face of "Uncle Sam." The cornice is both heavily carved and inset with medallions of varying colors of marble. Loggias at various levels and delicate ornamentation put this huge building in perspective to its environment.
