So the thought crossed your mind to move to Savannah? Or you've been stationed here, through the military or your job. Here's what you'll need to know to make your move and your time here more enjoyable.
Savannah is divided into two main sections known as: Downtown and Southside. Downtown contains the Historic District, while Southside contains businesses and our two malls, Savannah and Oglethorpe. It is an easy division to see driving up Abercorn (the main thoroughfare through Savannah, also known as Highway 204). Coming from Downtown, Southside starts when the trees stop, once you cross DeRenne. It's hard to miss because you'll see an unbelievably large globe. Yes, a huge representation of the earth, that was once a holding tank for extra materials for a gas company, and is now a well-known local landmark. Hunter Army Airfield is located on Southside. You'll see large military aircraft landing on the airfield, that look almost like they're about to land on Savannah businesses. The other regional military area is Fort Stewart, located in Hinesville, about 45 minutes from Savannah.
For more information on the different regions of Savannah, visit our Neighborhood Overview section.
The climate here will appeal to those who like the sun as well as semi-tropical temperatures. Downsides: during spring, watch out for bity sandgnats and mosquitos; during summer, hot temperatures and high humidity can make working outside rather unpleasant. Pluses: mild winters and no snow -- perfect beach and/or boating weather from May to October. Spring rains bring an explosion of green and Savannah's famous azaleas in March and you start to feel like you're driving around in a giant beautiful postcard.
